Savannah founder General James Oglethorpe brought Scottish Highlanders to the fort in 1736, after it had been abandoned. The settlement became known as Darien and was eventually used as an export site for lumber as well as a sawmill. The fort is now a Georgia State Park and three of the sawmills and tabby ruins still exist today.

McIntosh County, Georgia lies along the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, where more than 300 species of birds have been recorded along 18 sites. The Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge is also located here. The refuge’s swamplands serve as a home to thousands of egrets, herons and endangered wood storks. In the winter, mallards, gadwall and teal ducks reside in the marsh and freshwater ponds.

McIntosh County, Georgia was created in 1793 and named for the Scottish McIntosh clan that founded it. A Spanish mission was located here in the 16th century and an Indian village preceded that. Today’s Darien is the county seat of McIntosh County but was originally named New Inverness by its Scottish founders. The city’s geographic location at the mouth of the Altamaha River was the source of its nickname “Queen of the Delta”.

Darien suffered attack by Federal troops in the Civil war and many structures were burned. Reconstruction brought the town back to life after the war.

The 2000 Census reports 10,847 residents in McIntosh County, Georgia, with 1,719 living in the town of Darien.

Sapelo is perhaps one of the better-known barrier islands and is home of the historic R.J. Reynolds (tobacco) mansion. Today, the mansion is part of the Georgia State Park system and is open to overnight guests. The island is home to Hog Hammock, a community of the descendants of slaves who speak Gullah, the Creole-African language of their ancestors. The state of Georgia has protected Sapelo Island from further development.

Some of the most prestigious addresses in Georgia are in neighboring St. Simons Island, just moments from McIntosh County, Georgia. St. Simons is well known for multi-million dollar properties, elite shopping and recreation.

Within the boundaries of McIntosh County, Georgia, is the 5,126-acre saltwater marsh known as Wolf Island. Wolf Island is among the list of National Wildlife Refuge parks and wilderness areas and is accessible by boat only.
