Many Accolades For Savannah’s Ardsley Park And Chatham Crescent
Located about five minutes from historic downtown Savannah, Georgia, are the northern boundaries of Ardsley Park/Chatham Crescent. These two neighborhoods are Savannah’s first planned subdivisions and developed in the southeastern part of the city. The community lies throughout Midtown with Victory Drive to the north, 55th street on the south, Waters Avenue on the east and Bull Street to the west, according to the Ardsley Park/Chatham Crescent Neighborhood Association. The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce refers to Ardsley Park as “one of the city's hottest neighborhoods favored by young professionals and families.” Additionally, the community was recently named “Best neighborhood to live in” by Savannah Magazine for three consecutive years.
Ardsley Park is designed on a grid featuring landscaped squares with similarities to the original plans of Savannah founder General James Oglethorpe. Designed in 1910, the community has the distinction of being the city’s first automobile suburb, a result of the increasing popularity of motor vehicles that gave Savannahians the option to move to the outskirts of town.
Chatham Crescent was next on the developer’s drawing board. At roughly 174 acres, it is the larger of the two and features crescent-shaped boulevards, and small parks named for local officials. Ardsley Park features tree-lined streets, while the plan for Chatham Crescent’s 5,000 trees were to plant them directly in the residents’ front yards. The plants and trees along the streets and parks of Ardsley Park/Chatham Crescent provide some of the most beautiful springtime blooms in all of Savannah.
Ardsley Park/Chatham Crescent residents enjoy living in a community where craftsman bungalows are just around the corner from stately mansions. Most of the homes are single and two-story structures with detached garages at the rear of the properties. Architectural styles listed by the National Register are defined as “Late Victorian, late 19th and early 20th century American movements, late 19th and 20th century Revivals.” Historical significance of this area, according to the National Register includes social history, community planning and landscape architecture representing eras from 1900 to 1949.
Recreation for this area begins with walking or jogging through scenic parks and visiting Daffin Park, where minor league Savannah Sand Gnats baseball games are held at the Grayson Stadium. Daffin Park features baseball and soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts and playgrounds. There is also a swimming pool, pavilion and a lake for fishing. Golf, water sports, historic tours, museums and theater are just minutes away in any direction.
Most of the restaurants, shops and service-oriented businesses that serve the area are located on the outskirts of the Ardsley Park/Chatham Crescent community. Memorial Health University Medical Center and St. Joseph Candler Hospital are the area’s two largest hospitals and located within a short driving distance.
The Ardsley Park/Chatham Crescent Neighborhood Association helps to maintain the integrity of the community by focusing on and supporting historic preservation and neighborhood beautification. The group also hosts special children’s events and community gatherings throughout the year.
